Knowing Our Numbers

★ Here's how SAAVI teaches this:
💡 Example

Dekho — imagine you're helping your mother sort out old family photos. One album has 120 photos, and another has 95 photos. Socho zara — which album has more pictures, and how did you figure that out?

⚠️ Misconception

❌ Many students often think that the 'value' of a digit in a number is just the digit itself. For example, in the number 345, they might think the value of '3' is simply 3.

✅ But wait — the value of '3' in 345 is actually 300! Why? Because it's sitting in the 'hundreds place'. '3' is its 'face value', but its 'place value' changes depending on where it is.

🔬 Activity

Ek kaam karo — get some old newspapers or magazines and cut out different digits (from 0 to 9). Now, pick any three or four of these digit slips. Try arranging them to make the largest possible number and then the smallest possible number. What did you observe about how the position of the digits affects the number's size?

Whole Numbers

★ Here's how SAAVI teaches this:
💡 Example

Hey didi, imagine you're watching your favourite cricket team play. Before the match starts, how many runs are on the scoreboard? Zero, right? Then they score 1 run, then 2, then 3 – these are all Whole Numbers! They start from zero and keep going forward, endlessly. Socho zara — if we didn't have zero, how would you calculate the cricket score or even check your bank balance?

⚠️ Misconception

❌ Many students think that the smallest Whole Number is 1, just like in Natural Numbers.

✅ No didi, the smallest Whole Number is actually 0. Natural Numbers start from 1, but Whole Numbers include 0 too. Remember — don't forget the zero!

🔬 Activity

Ek kaam karo — gather about 10 rajma beans or small pebbles from home. Now, arrange them in a line starting from 0 – first nothing (0), then one, then two, and so on. The number right after each bean is its successor, and the one before it is its predecessor.
